During the First World War, the Gallipoli Campaign took place in Turkey from April 1915 to January 1916. The campaign was an effort by the Allies to take control of the Dardanelles Strait, a key waterway that would give them access to Russia and the Black Sea. The Allies hoped that by controlling this strait, they could break the stalemate on the Western Front and defeat Germany. However, the campaign was a complete failure, and resulted in heavy casualties for both sides.
The Gallipoli Campaign began with a naval assault on the Dardanelles Strait on April 18, 1915. This assault was led by British and French ships, but it was quickly repelled by the Turks.
