Day 1: Pamukkale and Hierapolis Day Trip from Bodrum

An early start gets you out of Bodrum ahead of the day’s heat, with pickup from your hotel and a comfortable drive inland through the hills and farmland of the Aegean hinterland. It’s a fair distance, so settle in for the ride — your guide will fill in the background on the region as the coast gives way to olive groves and the wide plains around Denizli.

Your main stop is Pamukkale, the white calcium terraces that step down the hillside like frozen waterfalls. You’ll walk barefoot along the travertines, where warm mineral water still trickles over the ridges and pools in shallow basins. Above them spreads the ancient spa city of Hierapolis, founded by the Romans and later a Byzantine centre. You’ll see the well-preserved theatre, the colonnaded main street, the monumental gateways and the sprawling necropolis, one of the largest ancient cemeteries in Anatolia. If you fancy a swim, the Antique Pool lets you float among submerged marble columns in warm spring water (entry payable on site).

There’s time to take it all in before the long return drive back to Bodrum, arriving in the evening for drop-off at your hotel.
